EED Implementation Support

Deliver savings on site

Many energy efficiency projects fail to deliver the savings they were designed to achieve. Not because the engineering was wrong, but because no one on the project team was specifically responsible for delivering them. Lumina acts as independent Energy Efficiency Design Expert throughout implementation, ensuring the project is commissioned, optimised, and handed over in a state that realises every projected saving.

Why projects underperform

Studies consistently show that actual energy performance in buildings falls significantly short of design predictions. Research assessing 23 buildings found actual consumption often double the prediction. More recent studies suggest in-use consumption can be 5 to 10 times higher than design-stage calculations, not because the measures failed, but because implementation, commissioning, and handover were not actively managed for energy performance.

Research finding

Studies such as PROBE, which assessed 23 buildings, reveal that actual energy consumption is often twice what was predicted. More recent research suggests in-use consumption can be 5 to 10 times higher than design-stage calculations.

The Energy Efficiency Design Expert (EED Expert) role exists specifically to close this gap. Lumina engineers bring the same technical understanding of the efficiency measures to the construction phase that they applied during the IGDR, and they are accountable for the savings, not just the specification.

What Lumina ensures

Lumina engineers are present throughout project delivery as independent advisors, working alongside the project team to verify that every decision made on site supports the energy performance outcome.

  • The project is optimised to maximise return on investment throughout delivery
  • The full project team understands the energy efficiency design philosophy and basis of design
  • All systems are properly commissioned and optimised for maximum efficiency before handover
  • The client team is trained and capable of operating and maintaining the systems correctly
  • Implementation is planned to minimise operational disruption
  • Measurement and verification arrangements are in place before handover, ready for ongoing optimisation
